How to enable family view option and why
Want to share your games with family or friends? Steam Family Library Sharing lets other people use your Steam library and play your collection of games.
Thankfully, Steam’s Family Sharing feature is a free and simple way to share games with trusted friends. Here’s how to set it up and a few important points.
What is Steam Family Sharing?
Steam Family Sharing is a feature in Valve’s Steam game distribution network/client that allows you to share your personal game library (the games you have downloaded/purchased from the Steam service) with friends and family. With this feature you can share your library, in totality, with up to 5 other Steam accounts and up to 10 devices authorized on the Steam network. Why would you want to do this? Unlike simply letting your roommate, spouse, or a friend sit down and play on your computer (or using your account on their computer) Steam Family Sharing allows for the other user to retain access to their own games while gaining the ability to play yours as well as maintain their own set of Steam achievements.
There are many glaringly obvious benefits to the Steam family sharing facility. The most obvious is having the ability to share games with friends and family without having to purchase the game for themselves. You can share up to a maximum of 10 devices at any one time as well.
It’s also a great way of re-using some of your older games that you no longer play.
Before you can enable Family Library Sharing, you must first have the Steam Guard security feature enabled. This can be done by opening the Steam settings menu, clicking on the Account tab, and selecting the “Manage my account with Steam Guard security” option.
To enable the sharing feature, you must first log in to your family member or friend’s computer with your Steam account. Next, open the settings menu, click on the Family tab, and choose to authorize the computer. You will then have the option to authorize any accounts that have also logged into the same computer.
Once this is complete, log out of your account and let your friend or family member log back into theirs. They will then have the ability to download and install select games from your gaming library. Keep in mind that you can only authorize up to 10 computers and up to five accounts to access your Steam gaming library.
Steam Family Library Sharing is one of the more complex features Steam offers, but it’s also one of the most useful. By following these steps, you’ve just allowed up to ten of your friends and family to play some of your awesome games. Good luck and enjoy your games 🙂
